Hotel Beacon
Description
Hotel Beacon is a historic hotel located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, at the corner of Broadway and West 75th Street. The property opened in 1928 and was designed by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager in the Beaux-Arts style. It is a 24-story building that has operated for nearly a century, maintaining a residential atmosphere with spacious accommodations. Its location provides access to Central Park, Lincoln Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and other cultural institutions on the Upper West Side.
The hotel was developed during the late 1920s as part of a larger hotel-and-theater complex that also included the Beacon Theatre. Construction began in 1927, and the hotel officially opened in November 1928. It originally featured a powerful airway beacon on its roof, intended to assist aircraft navigation during the early years of commercial aviation. This feature reflected the technological optimism of the period and contributed to the hotel’s early visibility. Over the following decades, the property adapted to changing market conditions while preserving much of its historic character and architectural details.
Hotel Beacon has maintained larger-than-average room sizes compared to many Manhattan hotels, with some units including kitchenettes that support longer stays. The building has hosted a variety of guests over time, including artists, performers, writers, and long-term residents, reflecting the cultural environment of the Upper West Side. The hotel has undergone periodic updates to meet modern expectations while retaining its classic Beaux-Arts exterior and traditional interior elements.
Its position on the Upper West Side offers convenient access to major cultural venues, parks, dining options, and transportation networks. The hotel serves both leisure and business travelers seeking a more residential-style accommodation in a historic Manhattan neighborhood. Since opening, it has operated as an independent hotel with a longstanding presence in the area.
This hotel was selected from Hebrew-language sources recommended to Israeli travelers for their stay in New York, particularly for attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches.
