1 – Entry into the Israeli Market
The retail giant entered the Israeli market in 2023 with a significant investment and planned to open a large number of stores across the country. These stores were designed with the goal of lowering prices in the food market. (1)
2 – Protests and Pressures
Some activists, BDS organizations, and groups in France and other countries have accused Carrefour of supporting Israel “directly or indirectly,” or participating in activities established in occupied Palestine.
For example, there have been reports that Carrefour would open stores in the areas of “Judea and Samaria” (meaning the disputed West Bank areas) or collaborate with companies active in these regions. (2)
3 – Carrefour’s Reaction to these Pressures
The company has stated that it will not open any stores in the occupied West Bank territories (Judea and Samaria). (3)
They have also stated that their decisions are primarily based on their business plan rather than political influences or pressure from pro-Palestinian organizations. (4)
4 – Consumer Pressure / Actions by Communities
In some countries like Jordan, Carrefour faced pressure from consumers due to allegations of supporting Israel. In November 2024, Carrefour announced that it would close all of its stores in Jordan, which some media outlets linked to a response to consumer boycotts.
Within France, certain groups have also called for a boycott of Carrefour, partly due to reports alleging the “provision of food packages to Israeli soldiers” while the conflicts were ongoing. (5)
